Who We Are

Electra Johnson Design + Planning (EJD+P) is a Colorado-based planning and design practice dedicated to revitalizing communities, restoring landscapes, and empowering people. We believe that true change begins locally,  and that when we invest deeply in place, we create communities that thrive for generations.

Rooted in Colorado, informed by the American West, and inspired by best practices from around the world, our work bridges traditional knowledge and innovation. We bring a regenerative lens to every project, whether revitalizing a rural main street, restoring a watershed, or designing resilient housing, and strive to leave every place we touch better than we found it.

Vision

We envision a Colorado where communities, landscapes, and economies flourish together—where Main Streets hum with connection and commerce, soils and watersheds are restored as living systems, and future generations inherit not just what we have preserved, but what we have renewed.

Through the lens of planning and design practice, we see a future where rural towns are thriving centers of belonging, circular economies turn waste into opportunity, and public spaces bring generations together. Our vision is of a state that feeds itself, powers itself, and sustains itself, a Colorado that inspires resilience across the world.

Mission

Our mission is to transform Colorado’s communities through regenerative planning and design, revitalizing places, restoring landscapes, and empowering people. We build resilient, self-reliant towns and regions by integrating:

·       Community-led solutions that return decision-making and prosperity to local people.

·       Regenerative design that restores soils, forests, watersheds, and wildlife corridors as living systems.

·       Circular economies that keep resources, jobs, and wealth in the communities that create them.

·       Infrastructure and public spaces that connect people to place and adapt to the realities of climate change.

We are committed to leaving things better than we found them, designing places that endure, adapt, and thrive for future generations.

Guiding Principles – Electra Johnson Design + Planning (EJD+P)

1.     Plan and Design for Regeneration – Go beyond minimizing harm; restore and enhance the systems, natural, cultural, and economic, that sustain life.

2.     Honor Local Knowledge and Culture – Begin with the wisdom of communities, trades, and landscapes, weaving traditional practices with innovative solutions.

3.     Empower Through Participation – Engage communities as co-creators, ensuring that planning and design decisions reflect their needs, voices, and aspirations.

4.     Think in Systems – Recognize the interconnectedness of land, water, people, economy, and culture, planning holistically rather than in silos.

5.     Prioritize Equity and Access – Ensure all communities, especially rural and historically underserved areas, have access to opportunity, resources, and representation.

6.     Design for Adaptation and Resilience – Anticipate change, climate, economic, and social,  and build flexibility into every solution to withstand and evolve with future challenges.

7.     Strengthen Local Economies – Support circular systems, local industries, cooperatives, and trades that keep wealth and decision-making within communities.

8.     Connect People to Place – Create environments, Main Streets, public spaces, watersheds, that foster belonging, pride, and a shared sense of stewardship.

9.     Integrate Nature into Infrastructure – Treat natural systems as essential infrastructure, designing with forests, soils, water, and biodiversity as central to community health.

10.  Leave a Legacy – Make decisions with long-term impact, ensuring that what we build today enriches lives and landscapes for generations to come.
